Biographical and Professional Information

Arch Ward was the sports editor and columnist of the Chicago Tribune for 25 years, known as a promoter first and a writer second. In 1933, he created the Major League Baseball All-Star-Game for Chicago’s Century of Progress Exposition at the World’s Fair. His other creations include the College All-Star Game and the Golden Glove amateur boxing competition. But he was also a writer. Starting in 1930, he began writing “In the Wake of the News,” a column he inherited from sports-writing legend Ring Lardner.
