Authority control is the process by which consistency of form is maintained in headings for names, uniform titles, series titles and subjects used in a library catalog. Authority control can also be used to provide “see” and “see also” references, to disambiguate similar headings, and to collocate records for the same work (such as translations or classical music). This course provides instruction on how to use OCLC Connexion Browser to perform authority control work within bibliographic records. After completing this Web-based training, learners will be prepared to: interpret authority records, search and browse the OCLC authority file, and link headings in bibliographic records to appropriate authority file records. This course does not cover Authority History, the OCLC Terminologies Service, the Chinese Name Authority File, nor procedures for NACO libraries.

RDA (Resource Description and Access) is the new cataloging code that is currently being implemented. Is it really going to happen? What does it mean to my library? What can I do now to prepare for it? Do I have other options?
In this one-day online workshop, come and hear about what RDA is all about. Learn some new terminology, and find out about the underlying frameworks of RDA. The current implementation timeline, as well as the RDA Toolkit, will also be discussed. Finally, hear about some of the issues facing RDA implementation. Most importantly, we will discuss whether libraries are really going to adopt the new code, and why.

This is an introduction to the 23rd edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The instructor will teach participants how to interpret and construct Dewey Decimal call numbers. Participants will learn how to derive the base number from the index and schedule and then how to complete the number using tables and other devices. Participants will examine a number of examples in detail and will also construct numbers from scratch. The examples will cover all major subject areas in the classification scheme. Participants will learn how to construct "complete" Dewey numbers, such as those that are used in large research libraries, but will also learn how to build "truncated" Dewey numbers, such as those that are used in school, public and small academic libraries.

This workshop provides practical experience in assigning Library of Congress Subject Headings as part of the cataloging process. Participants will learn how to perform a technical reading of an item and how to choose appropriate subject headings based on the principles of subject heading assignment put forth by the Library of Congress.
Participants will also learn how to verify headings they have assigned against the Library of Congress subject headings. The structure and interpretation of online LC subject authority records in the OCLC subject authority file will be covered as well as the structure of bibliographic tools such as the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings. Participants will perform a number of exercises in assigning subject headings to bibliographic works.

This workshop teaches participants how to catalog videos, DVDs and sound recordings (CDs, MP3s and cassettes, both musical and nonmusical), using such tools as AACR2, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations and Library of Congress Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings. The class will address both copy cataloging and original cataloging, all in the MARC format. The instruction will cover issues like the chief source of information, general material designation, physical description, main entry, choice of additional access points and assignment of subject headings. In addition, participants will learn the MARC fixed and variable fields for videos and sound recordings, and will study the relationships among these fields. The booklet for this workshop contains AACR2 rules combined with the relevant Library of Congress rule interpretations and MARC coding information. Bibliographic Formats and Standards will also be used. We will also peek ahead, beyond AACR2, to the new set of cataloging rules, RDA.

This class is designed to help you better understand MARC, whether you are a cataloger, reference librarian, interlibrary loan practitioner or support staff. If you're contemplating migrating to a new system or automating your library for the first time, a better understanding of MARC will be helpful.
What's covered in this class? The instructor will present an overview to MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) records and related terminology, such as the fixed and variable fields, tags, indicators, subfields and International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). We will discuss how MARC tagging and coding of cataloging data is used in bibliographic records. We'll set out guidelines for record selection, when to create and enter new records and how to interpret and edit records. Finally, we'll go over the input standards for adding records to WorldCat and to local automated catalogs.

This course provides instruction on more commonly-used features of Flash Chat, such as using Co-browse during a Chat session, instant message (IM) with another Chat librarian, and transferring an existing patron to another Chat librarian. This course provides instruction on a variety of QuestionPoint reports to assist learners with identifying service trends, making management decisions, and providing quality control for their institutions and/or groups. Learners will be able to see the convenient reporting capabilities that exist at the subscription group level, the individual library level, and the librarian level, as well as identify the appropriate reports for the desired information.
