Hi Christopher,

This is Ivan Johnson from Braille Institute Library Services in Los Angeles. We are somewhat in the same boat down here. I was in post-production film/tv sound for a number of years. I have recorded several children's books in the past few months but severe space limitations prevent us from providing a comfortable environment to record lengthier material. We use Sound Forge to record, iZotope RX to clean up and enhance, and Hindenburg to mark up, etc.

Our Library Director is working on accommodating us with better recording environs so that we can get going with volunteers and technicians. We have also cleaned up, digitized and marked up hundreds of older analog titles. Feel free to call with questions or observations. Hours here in Los Angeles are 8:30-5:00 Monday through Friday.

Regards,

Ivan Johnson

Introduction.

Good day all,
Let me introduce myself. My name is Christopher Duran and I am the new Audio/Visual Assistant here at The California State Library (Braille and Talking Books Section) located in Sacramento Ca.
We are currently in the process of reviving the Talking Books program and recording studio and our main goal here is to get the studio up and running again and start pumping out books. The studio is still in operation but the projects have been limited. We have converted to HABC for both recording and markup.
I am new to NLS and Talking Books though I've been doing audio production for many years. In a sense I am and BTBL is starting from "scratch." I have been reading a lot of literature regarding policies and procedures. Although I come to the table with audio engineering experience, this is a completely different animal to me.
So in closing I just wanted to reach out and say that if anyone has any advice or comments regarding volunteer recruitment, recording, etc. I would love to hear from you, including any tips for an enthusiastic newcomer to NLS Network local recording.
My schedule is currently 7:30AM to 4PM Pacific Monday through Friday. Thanks for your time everyone and I look forward to hearing from you all

Sincerely
Christopher Duran
