[Studiotalk] analogue cassette to digital transfer

We use Telex equipment, soundcards and software but these are obsolete. Up until this year, there have been a series of high-speed cassette digitizers by a company called “Graff of Newark.” We recommended these units to an organization that wanted to digitize their cassette library – and they recently obtained a unit, along with software and soundcards from B&H Audio in NYC. I checked B&H just now and the specific unit for libraries is reported as “no longer available.” You may be able to locate the same equipment elsewhere. Here’s the link to the old B&H offering: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/562787-REG/Graff_Of_Newark_LC60554_4_Track_Library_for.html

Good luck!

We use an old model 424 Tascam PortaStudio, and yes, you’ll have to adjust the playback speed.

The good news is, this is an easy fix, you just have to create a batch processing preset that you can use to adjust the speed / pitch of the digitized file(s).

The other plus with the 424 PortaStudio is that it can output all 4-sides/channels simultaneously, so you can digitize an entire cassette (6 hours of audio) in just a few minutes.

A question for any of you who are transferring NLS cassettes from analogue to digital : what are you using for playback of the cassettes?

I tried playing the cassettes on an old NLS cassette player but the sound quality is so awful (with incredible hum and background noise) that I abandoned that immediately.

The solution seems to be an old 4-track cassette recorder or 'mini-studio', but many of them record/playback at DOUBLE speed, so I'm interested to know if there are specific brands/models that others are having success with.

Thanks!

James
