We had Chris Mundy work with us to get our studio, which sounds a lot like yours, up and running due to all his good advice. Once we had everything in place, Phi Carbo spent time with us.

Hi Ilia
I'm sure you will get a lot of replies to this message with a lot of suggestions about equipment, most of which will read like Greek to you if you are not an audio person.
My advice is to consider using a little of your budget to have a consultant 'create' the studio for you, put together a package of equipment which will work together.
In order to get professional-quality results, you ideally will need some kind of sound-proof booth, a decent 'desktop' computer with plenty of storage memory, a DAW (digital audio workstation) of some kind, ie software like ProTools, Logic or HABC, a decent microphone, cables, and an interface (for example, a Scarlett 2i2) to turn the sound into digital information, and professional headphones for the monitor.
You might consider asking Chris Mundy at Multi State Center East for advice - his email address is msce1 at iac.net<mailto:msce1 at iac.net>
Chris is extremely generous with his time, knowledgeable and helpful. He will likely point you towards Hindenburg Audio Book Creator (HABC), software developed for NLS which can be used as a one-stop-shop for recording and authoring NLS Digital Talking Books.
I'm happy to help in any way I can - jameslangton at nypl.org<mailto:jameslangton at nypl.org>
Good luck and best wishes,
James

We have been presented with a grant opportunity for a recording studio to record local books, can anyone suggest what we might need? We currently have a room, about 8 ft. by 8ft, it has a window and ceiling tiles on the walls for sound (It was a rough recording studio a few decades ago). We've used Audacity in the past for short newsletters. I'm thinking we would need maybe 2 or 3 microphones, a filter, not really sure what else. Can anyone suggest a list of items?
Thanks!
