Ms. Poos,
Thank you for sharing your plans with us.
I believe I found the article you were referring to:
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/world-news/new-coronavirus-can-survive-on-surfaces-for-hours-study/corona-pandemic-bigger-than-sars/slideshow/74688876.cms<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__economictimes.indiatimes.com_news_international_world-2Dnews_new-2Dcoronavirus-2Dcan-2Dsurvive-2Don-2Dsurfaces-2Dfor-2Dhours-2Dstudy_corona-2Dpandemic-2Dbigger-2Dthan-2Dsars_slideshow_74688876.cms&d=DwMFAg&c=jvUANN7rYqzaQJvTqI-69lgi41yDEZ3CXTgIEaHlx7c&r=unlFhFNY0LF9aVxQL3UEuUvGHb3pi9Wi_djipkap-zg&m=VmJ_efC-LraNC3RGT7ozQVwdGpGB8VUmJ4qKYG4gG34&s=u1rmcckCGEmJABbgXx3YgktqW8052ChJPrcW0qtvcXs&e=>
But I can't find the verbiage that says particles stay suspended in the air for a half-hour before they drift to a surface. The only text I found I copied below, which says three hours, but that might be an overstatement:
"The team used a nebuliser to simulate a person coughing or sneezing, and found
that the virus was detectable for three hours in the air. The study was first posted
on a medical pre-print website last week before it was peer-reviewed, and
attracted much attention, including some criticism from scientists who said that it
may have overstated the airborne threat.
The virus is predominantly transmitted by respiratory droplets and in this form it is
viable for only a few seconds after a person coughs or sneezes. Critics
questioned whether a nebuliser accurately mimicked a human cough or sneeze.
The team behind the NEJM study performed similar tests on the SARS virus,
finding the two viruses behave similarly. But their similar viability fails to explain
why the novel coronavirus pandemic has infected close to 200,000 people and
caused almost 8,000 deaths, while the SARS epidemic infected about 8,000 and
killed nearly 800."
I could not find the primary source of the US Government study they were referencing. Do you have it?
I Have been doing research, but KTBL has not reopened yet. One of the biggest remaining pieces of data we need is good info on how long the virus stays in the air, so I'm interested in anything you found.
I have read that infectability from airborne particles is a measure of how concentrated the virus is in the available airspace. So, the bigger the airspace, like a grocery store, the less dangerous it potentially is, because it becomes more dissipated in the large air mass.
I am worried that guidelines for airborne virus are generalized to more common settings, like a restaurant or store, and I don't know how the tiny air volume and sealed nature of a sound booth might change those recommendations, other than to guess it might require additional time past what estimates are given for larger spaces. Then again, maybe the virus falls out of the air at the same rate, no matter the concentration? It would be great to know for sure.
Any information you have would be very helpful as we make our plans,
Thank you,

Lin,
We did research and found an article from The Economic Time (May 28, 2020) "How long can coronavirus survive on surfaces and in the air?" It stated the particles stay suspended in the air for about a half-hour before they drift to a surface. After 30 minutes we go in and clean. We spoke to NLS about how to clean the microphone and they recommended using a Clorox wipe. A thorough cleaning of the booth happens after each narrator. We were not going to have our volunteers wear a mask and record because we did not want the quality of sound to change.
Our volunteers have been very appreciative of our guidelines. They adhere to the mask wearing until the narrator is in the booth and then the monitor and narrator take them off. They have adjusted to the way the books and supplies are laid out and how to sign in and out. One volunteer commented they wished more places would take this as seriously as we have. The volunteers are thrilled to be back and I believe are willing to do what is necessary so they can be here and volunteer. And all the cleaning is done by Wolfner staff, so I wouldn't say there are too many restrictions for the volunteers.
Attached are pictures of how the volunteer spaces look like.
I hope this helps and let me know any other questions you have!

Hi Amy,
We haven't even gotten back to having any volunteers in our building yet, but hopefully that is coming sometime soon. My question to you concerns having your narrators recording in your sound booth. Originally, I proposed when we do open to have my narrators use a simple mask to limit possible viral elements being put in the limited air of the booth. While I would rather not do this, I just wondered what caused you to make the decision to allow your readers to narrate without a mask. Does it have anything to do with the way a closed booth recycles the air inside. Just wondered. I'm trying to make returning to the studio as safe but at the same time I don't want to impose too many restrictions on them if they aren't necessary.
Best of luck to you,
