I would always urge digitizing from the original reel masters as they are far superior to the cassette sub-masters made from those original reels. The sound quality difference is almost always incredibly dramatic. We only ever digitize
from the cassette submaster when there is no available or viable reel master.

Even though our large reel master collection has been stored in an inhospitable warehouse environment with completely inappropriate climate controls, those reel masters are still a far better source from which to digitize. There is a consensus,
I believe, that reel masters stored in such bad conditions can return to a decent state enabling a good digitization transfer through simply bringing the reels into a better climate controlled environment for a brief period of time. We try to do such acclimatization
for at least a week or more before we then use the tried and true low-temperature baking process for a long time that can (temporarily for about a month’s time) reverse even some of the worst sticky-shed syndrome problems often created by reels being stored
in such bad environs. As before, if you have further questions about such processes, please don’t hesitate to ask.
