[Studiotalk] Long titles - any suggestions

I concur about the challenge of long projects.

I agree about finding someone who has interest in particular subject matter is important. If you can find someone who is passionate about providing access to this particular project is often the determining factor.

I do sometimes give the volunteer a short break from the project if it's super long.
We have short children's book lists that we have on our docket to read each year and if they can feel the sense of accomplishment by finishing a short kids book in one or two sessions it gives them a boost in the midst of a slog of an endless book.

We have had many pioneer stories that are on the docket to be read. One book took a couple years because I gave the volunteer other higher priority projects that came along. She actually said that the smaller projects helped her stick around instead of being burned out from this one particular large pioneer story (especially after reading a similar type pioneer book previously). That sense of actually completing these smaller urgently needed by patrons type projects (such as a driver's license manual, kids' books, or small pamphlet size projects) gave that needed boost.

And like John said finding someone who can commit to more frequent recording sessions.

But I hope you can find someone (even a new volunteer) who can have passion for this particular project.

I just saw your latest email Linden. I am right there with you with volunteers. I can maybe get a volunteer to come in twice a week but only if it's a magazine that they are trying to get done quickly and they get it done in four sessions or so.

Also, I've not really done it (except for a couple kids' books, maybe a magazine) where multiple narrators record one project. That could be a problem for listeners I'd imagine unless the book had different distinct sections.

Generally, subject matter, rather than length has proven more dissuasive concerning project acceptance in my experience.

Having said that, I am aware that New Mexico's longest project of late has been about 20 hours in length (about 450 pages) and met with some volunteer despair in the reviewing portion. That project took about one year, four months to complete.

How lengthy of a project are you considering? Matching subject matter to volunteer interests (preferably a volunteer, who regularly reads more than once a week) may present a solution.

Hi all,

This morning's question involves long titles and how you handle them? Do any of you have trouble when it comes to selecting long titles and then finding a volunteer to take one on? Do you have any suggestions as to how to present a title to a volunteer narrator when you know they may be in the book for a long time? I have at least one title that I have which could take as long as two years to complete that I would like to do, but I often have trouble getting people to commit to a book for that length of time. Anybody else run into this problem?
