[Studiotalk] Archiving In-house Masters?

Good morning Etta and all.

Here in Texas our archival processes continue to change over time.

Currently, we burn to DVD both the raw, un-mastered born-digital and analog-to-digital conversion wav files, as well as the compressed, exported DTB files created by HABC, and the exported wav files (mastered before being put into HABC for markup).

Once all of those are archived we delete the wav files from all PC workstation drives, and operational servers, storing only the compressed, exported DTB files on a different archival server.

Due to a variety of bureaucratic factors in Texas, it is currently to costly for us to use server space to store the wav files for archival purposes - this may change eventually but for now we are burning those to DVD discs.

The good news with the compressed, exported DTB files is that they can be uncompressed and the wav files recreated is near lossless quality. So in some ways the exported wav files are just a redundant backup that we may eliminate archiving of in the future.

All servers are backed-up overnight at an off-site data center.

Hope this is helpful.

Subject: [Studiotalk] Archiving In-house Masters?

Hi all,

We are looking at our archival strategies for our in-house masters, I thought I'd reach out and how others are handling this.

We are specifically looking at the following questions:

* What files are you backing up?

o Which file formats are you keeping?

* How long are you maintaining your archival copy?

* How are you backing them up?

o If you are using an off-site back-up, what pros/cons have you found?

I'd be happy to compile all the responses and share with the list if others are interested.

Thanks so much for your help and time,
Etta
